POWERFUL FORTS
OVERCOME WITH DIFFICULTY BY GERMANS. THE EVER-PRESENT THREAT TO COMMUNICATIONS. ZURICH, July 29. Writing in the “Voelkicher Beobachter,” a German lieutenant recounts the German difficulties on the Eastern Front. He states that the Russians exploited every possibility of the art of fortification where the Dnieper River turns eastward (Vitebsk sector). It no longer offered natural protection, and the Russians built unusually strong fortifications. At one place 80 forts had to be overcome. The Russians constantly offered desperate resistance. The German prospects depended on the maintenance of a few roads which were still serviceable. He also describes German divisions thrusting continually forward, though they knew that the gap behind them was instantly closed, their communications and supplies being cut off.
