Mr H. B. Irvine, Masterton, is spending a holiday at Napier. Private cable advice has been received that Pilot Officer K. S. Peterson, Royal Air Force, only son of Captain P. S. Peterson, harbourmaster at Wellington, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Mr Max Dixon, son of Mr and Mrs T. W. Dixon, Renail Street, left Masterton on Saturday last for Levin to go into training with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He has taken an active part in the affairs of the Old Boys’ Cricket Club. Mr E. G. Norman, of Messrs Thomas Borthwick & Sons, Ltd., left Masterton today for Auckland. On Saturday he will set out for America by a flying boat. From thence he will fly to England and ultimately will take up an appointment in Argentina. The funeral of the late Mr Thomas Verity took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon. Services at the Chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service, Ltd., and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev H. S. Kings. The pallbearers were Messrs R. C. Baikie, H. Marsh, J. Nicol, W. Nicol, V. E. Burridge and J. Leighton. Mr H. A. Keeling, for the past 25 years produce manager for the Bank of New Zealand, at its head office, retired from the service on June 30. Recently his fellow officers met him in the board room, when the general manager, Mr H. R. Chalmers, presented him with an easy chair as a memento of their esteem and goodwill. Mr Frank Pender, for over nine years manager of the Bank of New Zealand in Sydenham, Christchurch, has retired on superannuation. Between 40 and 50 bank officers from all parts of Canterbury attended a farewell gathering at which Mr Pender was tendered the good wishes of all associated with the bank.
