CARTERTON COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. REFLECTOR ROAD SIGNS TO BE INSTALLED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council held in the Council Chambers last evening was presided over by the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner. There were also present: Councillors W. A. Hart, E. McKenzie, H. Mortenson. L. M. Clark, C. J. DeLacey, H. E. Jackson, Miss O. W. Wolters and the Town Clerk, Mr P. A. Cole. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors C. E. Stevens and W. R. Harry. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £6BO 4s lid at the Bank of New Zealand, but there was a deposit of £2956 5s 5d to the general account at the Post Office Savings Bank. The gasworks account showed a credit balance at the Bank of £352 19s sd. The secretary of the Masterton Hospital Board wrote notifying that the amount due by the Carterton Borough for maintenance purposes was £553 8s and for capital purposes £57 12s, a total of £6ll, payable quarterly. The borough solicitors, Messrs Hart and Tucker, wrote enclosing a report of recent enquiry concerning the chlorination plant for the Carterton Borough water supply. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Councillor W. A. Hart, it was decided that the clerk be authorised to get into touch with firms regarding the installation of a chlorination plant and the estimated running cost of a complete plant. Some discussion ensued regarding the purchase and installation of reflector road signs. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Councillor McKenzie, it was decided to instal 20 signs at the pedestrian crossings at Holloway Street. Mr McAulay is to be given fourteen days’ notice to remove the sawdust nuisance at the Lincoln Road pit, where he had a sawmill, failing which the matter will be placed in the borough solicitors’ hands. Mr Pripe is to be instructed to remove a fence erected by him in Phillip Street, and that he be given 7 days to remove the fence'failing which the Council will remove it at Mr Price's expense.

It was decided that all patching work required in the borough be carried out at once.

Mr W. Wright is to be offered sections 143-213 Phillip Street for a sum arranged by the council. It was decided to place an order for six A.R.P. bucket pumps at , £4 15s each.

The Clerk was authorised to purchase the necessary concrete fencing posts and iron standards for the erection of a fence.line on the new stock street.

Councillor H. E. Jackson referred to the parking sign at the entrance to Holloway Street and on his motion it was decided that new signs be placed on each side of the telegraph pole, facing north and south. Councillor DeLacey referred to the bad state of Belvedere Street from'the main highway to the railway station, and it was decided to improve the culverts and water channel.

The reports of the Works’ Committee, the Gas Committee and the road Overseer were adopted.

Councillors O. W. Wolters and H. Mortensen were authorised to sign the Borough Rate Roll.
