RUGBY FOOTBALL
MASTERTON CLUB.
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
The fortnightly meeting of the management committee of the Masterton Football Club was held on Monday night, in Mr W. V. Madden's office, Leecroft Chambers, there being a good attendance of members present. The secretary was instructed to extend the club’s sympathy to the parents of the late Frank Long and Cecil Goodhue, two members who made the supreme sacrifice while on active service.
Arrangements have been made to play a team from Homewood on Saturday next, subject to the consent of the Rugby Union. Ralph Braggins, who recently had the misfortune to break a leg while playing football, was reported to be doing very satisfactorily. The sympathy of all club members is extended to him in his misfortune. An account for £3 2s 6d to the Memorial Park Lighting Committee was passed for payment. A’vote of thanks was recorded to Mi” and Mrs V. Grey for the use of their residence for the previous meeting, and also for the hospitality extended by them to the committee.
A letter from the Featherston Football Club regarding a proposed field day to be held at the end of the football season was received, and it was decided to take the matter up with the members of the teams and ascertain who would be able to make the trip to Featherston.
The following members had been accepted for overseas service:—Air Force: Reg. Prout (killed 11/11/40), Paddy Griffin, Les Groube, Foster Wellington, Frank Long (killed 12/3/41), Lennox Lamb (killed 31/10/39). Navy: J. Brett, T. E. Dwyer. Army: Gordon Simonsen (missing), Clary Goodhue, lan Morris, Edgar Hargood, Doug. Norman. Ben Taplin, Roy Blake, Rod Percy, “Bruiser” Welch, lan Percy, Ernie Scott, Don Slewart, H. Dickson,Stuart O’Brien, A. Tooby, M. Dooling, Frank Harrison, Leo McCracken, M. Cusack, Alf Dickason, Jack Ford, Colin Duncan, E. Simonsen, R. Wilson, Ken Percy, R. Clark, T. Neilson. Many other members have served three months training in the Territorial Force.
