HUNGER STRIKERS

DECISION OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. AN EARLY ANNOUNCEMENT PROMISED. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY. July 23. ' The Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, said that the War Cabinet had come to a decision which it would announce shortly in regard to the hunger-strik-ers. The Labour member, Dr Evatt, K.C., commenting on the Government’s handling of the hunger-strikers’ case, said a serious blunder had been made. “Whatever were the Communist activities of the two men, the authorities knew all about them last December, when they chose to prosecute and not intern them,” he said. “After serving their sentence they were released, and it was not till some time later that they were again detained with a view to internment, though no further offence was charged against them. “These facts raise the question of the general principle, with which the Minister has made no attempt to deal.”
