CARTERTON
RETURNED SOLDIERS MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. T. Murray presided over a full attendance of the Carterton committee of the Returned Soldiers’ Association held last evening. Matters in connection with the recent annual ball were finalised. The treasurer reported that the sum of £52 had been realised. After expenses have been met there will be a substantial credit balance. Mention .was made of the excellent work carried out by the ladies’ committee, and a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to them. Thanks were also passed to those who had so generously donated cash, etc., towards the supper. It was resolved that the sum of los be granted to the farewell gift to soldiers going overseas patriotic fund. GOLF CLUB COMPETITION DRAW. The following is the draw for a fourball bogey competition to be played by members of the Carterton Golf Club:—From No. 1 tee: Johansen and Colson v Smart and Dwane; Harrington and Callender v M. Knowles and Hill; Roydhouse and Brown v Whitburn and Jackson. From No. 3 tee: Goodin and Barrett v Clarke and Broadbent; Hughes and Nicholls v Riggs and Candy; Dudson and Beaven v Taylor and J. Pankhurst. From No. 17: Booth and Court v Steel and Knutsen; Taverner and Lawrence v Hart and Nix. Gun Club Competitions. Next Saturday the first competition in the A grade aggregate will be fired on the club’s grounds-in Norfolk Road. The final competition in the aggregate will take place on Saturday, August 16, and the B grade aggregate competitions on August 3 and August 31. Personal Items. News was received in Carterton yesterday by Mrs Keith Townsend that her husband had been killed in action in the Battle of Crete. Mrs Walter Bubb, of Longbush, who successfully underwent an operation in a Wellington Hospital, has returned home and is progressing favourably towards recovery. Advice that her husband, Corporal Warwick S. Hall had been posted as missing in Crete has been received by Mrs W. S. Hall, Park Road, Carterton. / Mrs Hall received official advice some ' time ago that her husband had been wounded in the Battle of Crete. The funeral of the late Mrs Edith Zabell took place yesterday. There was a large cortege. A short service was conducted by the Rev. W. J. Couling, of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, who also conducted the service at the graveside, assisted by the Rev.. J. A. Daglish, Methodist Church. The pallbearers were Messrs A. H. Callister, A. E. Reid, W. G. Thomas, A. E. Carter, W. Taylor and A. Archer. Many beautiful wreaths were forwarded testifying to the esteem in which deceased was held. Order of Odd Fellowship. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Past Grands’ Lodge of Odd Fellows will be held at Carterton on Thursday evening. Among the business to be dealt with will be the nomination and election of officers.
