SPROUTING POTATOES
I STUDY THESE HINTS. Frost must not reach the sprouting tubers, as just a degree or two is sufficient to kill the growing shoot. Although the tubers themselves may ap- • pear to be sound and unaffected, it will bo found that a slight frosting prevents proper sprouting. As the sprouts develop, it is well to keep a close watch to see that greenfly does not establish itself upon the growing shoots. Should any appear they should be brushed off or dusted with tobacco dust. It will be noted that no soil is necessary when sprouting potatoes. It is no A desirable to encourage root development until the sprouted tubers arc planted where they are to grow. The roots develop around the base of the sprout and so long as the air is dry they will remain little more than pimples. Planting will not be done until the weather is quite settled in spring because . sprouted tubers make very rapid growth once they are in the soil..
