HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

PAST YEAR’S OPERATIONS. REVIEWED BY EXECUTIVE. The annual report of the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Society, which will be presented to the annual meeting on Monday, July 28, states: The usual Daffodil and Spring Shows were held during the season. The quality of the exhibits generally was excellent but there were fewer entries than in other seasons, particularly for the Daffodil Show which brought 123 less entries than in the previous season. Due particularly to the fact that a Patriotic Queen Carnival was in progress in March and that many of the society’s active members were devoting much of their time to the carnival, your executive referred to your general committee a recommendation that the A.utumn Show be abandoned for 1941 and after most careful consideration, abandonment was agreed upon. The society finished its year with cash funds amounting to £llB 6s 6d, as against £164 5s lOd at the start of the year. After taking into consideration the amount of £5 received from the Masterton Borough Council for special expenditure, and the loan of £5O to the Government in accordance with the decision made at the last annual meeting, members will appreciate that the society has virtually “broken even" during the year in review. Due to the poor public support of these competitions, it was decided that they be abandoned for the 1940-41 season. Again we extend our best wishes for safety and early return to our members who are serving with the military forces. With regret we have noted particularly that Mr Jack Wallis, a former committeeman and an ardent horticulturalist, has been posted as missing. We sincerely hope that he will prove to be safe and well. Thanks are due to all who have assisted with the society’s shows, particularly the stewards, judges, those who have opened the shows, and the Press. Special thanks are offered to the society’s honorary treasurer, Mr H. M. Boddington, and the honorary auditors, Messrs Low and Cunningham. The report is signed on behalf of the executive by Mr H. L. Esau (president) ?
