SOLDIERS’ HOSTEL
DECREASE IN REVENUE. TWENTY-THIRD ANNUAL REPORT. The twenty-third annual report of the Wairarapa Soldiers’ Hostel records that expenditure is in excess of revenue by £24 7s lOd, after making the usual reserve of £5O against repairs and renewals. “Expenses have been kept at a minimum,” the report states, “yet cost of necessary repairs has exceeded the reserve of £5O made last year. With many of our members away serving in the different services, and Home Guard parades, it is to be expected that our revenue will decrease more, and with the heavy taxation imposed we must make an effort to increase our income, which can be done only by the support of members. Our club has fulfilled for twenty-three years, the service foreseen by our generous public. It was the intention of the late A. P. Whatman, our patron and trustee, when he endowed the club, that this service should be continuous, and the time is coming when the new generation of returned men will look to our institution for recreation. It must be remembered that our building and its appointments are twenty-three years old, and that the time is not far distant when a considerable sum must be spent on painting and renovation. “Whatman Cup: This competition resulted in a close finish, the winning team being L. Roff, F. Dean, H. Bannister' and A. Wyeth. These members are to be congratulated on their meritorious win. Owing to the small number of nominations received for this year's teams contest, it appears likely to lapse until times are more propitious.”
The report is signed by the president, Mr P. G. Ramsay.
