CARTERTON
SUNDAY MORNING FIRE KITCHENETTE DAMAGED. (“Times-Age” Special.) An alarm of fire was sounded on Sunday morning shortly after _ 7 o’clock. The brigade was quickly bn the scene of the outbreak which was at the residence of Mr V. Matthews, North High Street. The occupants of the house were aroused by the smell of smoke and upon investigation found the kitchenette to be on fire. Mr Matthews at once called up the brigade and it was not long before the outbreak was extinguished but not until the four walls of the kitchenette and the’ ceiling were badly burnt. The fire is presumed to have started in the vicinity of the hot water service. The smoke did considerable damage. Beside filling the rooms and damaging the furniture it discoloured the paper. CARD PARTY AND DANCE GATHERING AT PARKVALE. There was 'an exceptionally large crowd at the fortnightly patriotic dance and euchre tourney held in the Parkvale Hall on Saturday evening. Excellent dance music was provided by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s orchestra, extras being played by Mrs R. Williams and Mr M. Edwards. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs F. Harrington. Messrs V. J. Ashton and C. Jensen acted as M.’sC. The winners of the card prizes were: Ladies, Mrs Phelps 1, Mrs Burt 2; men, T. Hyde 1, and Thompson 2. Up to the present about £4O is in hand for patriotic purposes. The sum aimed at is £6O and with two more functions to be held it is expected this amount will be easily reached. The next gathering will be held on August 2. PARCEL EVENING BRIDE-TO-BE HONOURED. There was a very large attendance at the Dalefield Hall when a “parcel evening” was tendered Miss P. Bambry , to mark the occasion of her approaching marriage. The time was taken up with dancing to music provided by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s orchestra. Extras were played by Misses V. Irwin, V. Sorensen and Mrs R. Williams. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Hooper and partner and the lucky spot waltz by Miss Joyce Goodin and Mr B. L. Brassell. Mr V. J. Ashton made an efficient M.C. At a suitable interval Mr M.- J. Parker called upon Miss Bambry to open N the many parcels, which she did amid applause. Mr N. McPhee, on behalf of Miss Bambry suitably returned thanks. “For They are Jolly Good Fellows” was sung and good wishes extended to Miss Bambry. BIBLE SUNDAY SERVICES AT SALVATION ARMY HALL. A week’s services in connection with the “Back to the Bible” campaign commenced at the Salvation Army Hall yesterday. In the evening Brigadier Green led the meeting and he had the assistance of Major Hildreth, of the People’s Palace, Wellington, Major Hawkins, of the Miramar Industrial Home and Lieut. Daley, of Wellington. A “Mercy Seat” to the memory of the late Mr Frank E. Tyler, who was a staunch supporter of the Carterton Corps, was unveiled. The meeting was opened by Captain Ojalla, who welcomed and introduced the visitors. Special hymns were sung. The dedication of the Mercy Seat was performed by Brigadier Green in an impressive manner. The Brigadier took his lesson from the 37th Psalm. During the service the band played “The Salvation Story of Jesus.” During the offertory Captain Ojalla announced that the Army would hold services throughout the week and that next Sunday all meetings would be led by Home League members. Hockey. The Carterton senior men’s hockey team has won all its games this season and although there is another round to be played the team cannot be beaten for championship honours. The residents of Carterton should feel proud of their football and hockey players as this year both the hockey and football championships will come to Carterton. Heavy. Frosts. Probably the two heaviest frosts experienced in Carterton this winter were registered yesterday morning and ■M»dhis morning. Water services were frozen in many parts of the borough and it was well into the morning before water could be obtained from taps. Unpleasant Experience. Mr W. Wong had an unpleasant experience on Friday evening. He and an employee lit a fire in the furnace in the glass hot house at the rear of his premises. Thinking the fire was not burning they threw some oil into the furnace and closed the door. Combustion took place and the door was blown open, burning Mr Wong’s face and the back of one hand. Golf. In connection with the men’s bogey competition played on the Carterton links on Saturday the best cards handed in were: H. Colson 2 down, J. Dwane 3 down, P. Nicholls 3 down, C. K. Goodin 4 down, G. Pankhurst 5 down. The following were the best cards handed in on Saturday for the ladies’ competition: Miss V. Corlett 106, 35, 71: Mrs Johansen 92, 20, 72; Mrs Court 108 34, 74; Mrs Moroney 93, 16, 75; Mrs Orr 96, 20, 76; Mrs Murray 95, 19. 76; Miss Smart 97, 19, 78: Mrs Candy 95. 17, 78: Mrs Harrington 96. 17, 79; Miss Peters 110. 31 79. Miss V. Corlett 6 down, Mrs Harrington 7 down, Mrs Orr, Mrs Murray 8 down, Mrs Court 9 down, Miss Smart 9 down, Mrs Candy 9 down. Motor Collision. Early yesterday, morning a collision occurred in High Street, Carterton, between a motor- cycle and a car driven by Inspector C. S. Nicholson,- Traffic Officer. The latter was turning on the road in the vicinity of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church when a motor cyclist crashed into his car damaging a mudgard. The motor cycle was also damaged. No injury was suffered by the rider of the motor cycle. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs Geo. A. Vincent, who had spent a holiday in Gisborne, returned to Carterton on Friday. They were the guests of Mr and Mrs Fenwick. at Gisborne. Mr and Mrs Guy Booth, of Pahautanui, were visitors to Carterton over the weekend and stayed with Mrs Booth’s mother at Belvedere. Mr R. T. Forbes, manager of the Regent Picture Theatre, has left on holiday which is to be spent in Auckland.
