Old Boys and Greytown met at Lansdowne on Saturday, and a fairly evenly contested game was witnessed. Old Boys were handicapped through not having the services of their usual goalkeeper. For the first twenty minutes of play, both teams attacked at intervals, ‘but the defensive play was sound, and 'for the most part play was even and in midfield. J. Harrington opened the score for Old Boys, completely beating the defence. The remainder of the spell was even and uninteresting, the score being Old Boys 1, Grey town 0. The second spell opened at a faster pace. Greytown attacked and were awarded a penalty bully against Nicol for obstructing. In defending the bully Nicol again obstructed, and Greytown were awarded a penalty goal. From the bully-off Faulknor went through with a solo run and scored a good goal. Greytown soon pressed an attack, and Anker equalled the score. Old Boys put a bit more dash into their play, and were attacking for some time until Faulknor again goaled with a good shot, putting his team ahead. The home team continued to attack, but the Greytown backs kept them out. During the closing stages Greytown livened up, and Rees equalled with a good shot. The final whistle sounded shortly after with the score 3 all. Messrs Hayne and Fisher were the umpires. CARTERTON v. WESLEY. Carterton and Wesley met at Carterton, and a fairly even game resulted in a win for Carterton. The score was 2 goals each to within a few minutes of time, when Carterton scored, thus winning by 3 to 2. Messrs L. Gallon and E. Sayer were umpires. NORTH V. SOUTH WAIRARAPA The annual North v. South Wairarapa men’s game will be played next Saturday. The A teams will play at Carterton and the B teams at Masterton. The A match will be for the ThompsonPayne shield. LADIES’ ASSOCIATION

EXCELSIOR v. GREYTOWN. AN EXCITING GAME. A game which excited more than ordinary interest, and which was responsible for the gathering of a very good attendance of spectators, was played on the Lansdowne grounds on Saturday afternoon between Excelsior, last year’s champions, and Greytown, who, until last Saturday, were leading the local team by one point. On this game, therefore, the fate of the championship practically depended, and as a result of their win by 2 goals to 1, and with only one more match to play against one of the weaker teams, Excelsior should have no difficulty in winning the senior ladies’ championship for the fifth year in succession. The game itself was played at a very fast pace throughout, but owing to both teams possessing a very strong defence, was characterised by hard and rugged play rather than being of a spectacular nature. Both sets of forwards worked hard, but were hampered by the close attentions of the opposing halves and backs. Excelsior owe their win to the fact that, while holding their own in other departments of the game, their forwards appeared to be a bit faster and lasted out the gruelling second spell better.

Grey town played well in the first half, showing good combination and stick work, and deserved their lead of one goal at the interval. They appeared to slump a bit after the resumption, however, and playing with great determination, the Excelsior forwards jockeyed the ball into the net twice in fairly short order. The last quarter of an hour was full of excitement and incident, as Greytown threw everything to the winds in a last effort to pull the game out of the fire. Excelsior’s defence was too strong, however, and they held their lead to the end of the game. Messrs Moor and Cole very capably controlled the game.
