HUNGER STRIKE ENDS
APPEAL AGAINST DETENTION. IN AUSTRALIA. I (By Telegi-aph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 19. The hunger strikers, Max Thomas and Horace Ratliff, were borne on, stretchers from Yaralla Hospital yesterday into a special ward to face a tribunal which began a hearing of their appeal against their detention .under the National Security Act. Ratliff appeared very ill and Thomas was weak but cheerful after their 16 days’ fast, during which they had nothing more than water and orange juice. The appeal was held in camera. The hunger strike ended tonight, when the National Security Advisory Committee concluded a two days’ hearing of the men’s case. It will probably report its finding to Canberra on Monday.. Ratliff and Thomas were, so hopeful that the finding will be favourable that they broke the fast to build up their strength in order to take advantage of the expected release order. The men told the tribunal that they would support Australia's war effort, but they refused to acknowledge that the internment was either justified or justly executed.
