EIRE AND THE WAR
MR DILLON ADVOCATES ENTRV NO SUPPORT FROM MR COSGRAVE SENSATION IN THE DAIL. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) LONDON, July 18. The Deputy-Leader of the Cosgrave Party, Mr Dillon, caused a sensation in the Dail by advocating Eire’s entry into the war. He said they should ascertain precisely what Britain and America required to ensure success against the Nazi attempt at world conquest. He did not think Irish troops should be sent abroad, but Ireland ought to afford Britain and America all the accommodation they required within Irish territory, including naval and aerial bases. A gap had been opened in the lifeline between Britain and America and Ireland was in a position to close it. Mr Cosgrave dissociated himself from Mr Dillon’s speech. According to the “Daily Express,” the Prime Minister, Mr de Valera, wanted Mr Dillon’s speech suppressed, but the Eirean censor later passed it for publication in Britain. Replying to the debate, which was on external affairs, Mr de Valera said:— f “If anybody attacks us, no matter from what side, every one of us can die for a just cause. If we are attacked it will be by one of the big nations. We must face that and we are prepared to face it. We are determined to live our own lives.”
