ACTION EXPLAINED

DETENTION OF ULSTER M.P. STATEMENT BY HOME SECRETARY (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 18. The Home Secretary, Mr Morrison, stated that the action in detaining Mr Cahir Healy, member of the Northern Ireland Parliament, was taken because he had reasonable cause to believe that Mr Healy recently had been concerned in acts prejudicial to the public safety and of the defence of the realm, or in preparation or instigation of such acts, and that by reason of this it was necessary to exercise control over him.

Mr Healy was a Nationalist M.P. in the Imperial Parliament for Fermanagh and Tyrone from 1922 to 1924 and 1931 to 1935, and lias been a member of the Ulster Parliament since 1925. He was interned by the Northern Ireland Government from 1922 to 1924 without being charged, and was only released when the matter was raised at Westminster.
