WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MATARAWA-DALEFIELD MEETING (“Times- Age” Special.) Mrs N. Nielsen presided over a good attendance of members of the Mata-rawa-Dalefield Women’s Institute, held in the Matarawa school. Mrs H. E. Knowles gave a very interesting talk on Women’s Auxiliary War Services and was accorded a vote of thanks, as also was Mrs Geo. Knowles for her demonstration of making paper flowers. The monthly competitions resulted: Seniors, best ginger cake, Mrs W. J. McPhee 1, Mrs W. Ticehurst 2. Mrs Rogers 3; best bloom, Mrs Rogers 1. Mrs Nielsen 2, Mrs Ticehurst 3. Juniors best ginger cake, Miss Jean Conweil 1, Miss Beth Sadler 2, Miss Iris Zillwood 3; best flower;, Miss Beth Knowles 1, Miss Jean Knowles 2, Miss Iris Zillwood 3. The ginger cake was afterwards sent, to the A.N.A. Club, Wellington, for the soldiers’ tea. GOLF BOGEY COMPETITION. The following is the draw for a bogey competition: —From No. 1 tee. Lawrence and Goodin, Gustofson and Brown, Knutson and Clarke, Dudson and Johansen, Roydhouse and Taylor; from No. 3 tee: Hughes and Knowles, Taverner and Hill, Hart and Dwane, Nicholls and Whitburn, Booth and Harrington; from No. 17: Steel and Smart, Nix and Fisher, Candy and Colson, Riggs and Barrett, Jackson and Broadbent, Pankhurst and Beaven, Court and Meyrick. Patriotic Committee. The annual meeting of the Belvedere District Patriotic Entertainment Committee will be held in the Dalefield Dairy Co’s building, Carterton, on Friday, at 1.30 p.m. St John Ambulance Brigade. The first meeting of the Carterton division of the St John Ambulance Brigade will be held at 7.30 o’clock tomorrow evening in the Dalefield Dairy Co’s building, Carterton. Dance & Euchre Party. A dance and euchre tournament in aid of patriotic funds will be held in the Parkvale Hall on Saturday evening. The music will be supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s orchestra. Good prizes will be given in the ladies and men’s euchre sections. z Personal Items. Mr and Mrs W. McPherson, of Victoria Street, Carterton, have received from Wing Commander J. B. Wallis, in Scotland,- a letter referring to the death of their son. Under date May 3, 1941, the writer stated that an accident occurred in the early hours of the morning of May 1, when Air Navigator McPherson’s aeroplane struck the top of a high mountain near Wick in the Caithness County, while flying in a cloud and darkness, causing his death. Another member’ of the Air Force to which deceased was attached, J. Groscott, wrote that “Mac” was held in high esteem in his squadron both as a navigator and a man. S. Atkinson, also of the same squadron, wrote stating that deceased was buried at Wick on the East Coast of Scotland, about 14 miles from John o’ Groat’s. Accompanying the letters were three photographs of the funeral. Mrs A. Ingley, of Carterton, underwent a second operation at the Masterton Hospital yesterday and is progressing satisfactorily. Carterton Racing Club. The new date applied for by the stewards of the Carterton Racing Club, Saturday, September 13, has been approved by the Racing Conference. The date of the meeting should result in good nominations and acceptances inasmuch as all the 2-year-olds will probably be given , a try-out preparatory to competing in other fixtures. The noted trainer, Mr T. R. George, is training a large string of youngsters and other seasoned horses on the Carterton racecourse. Splendid Football Record. In their 9 games in the senior championship this season Carterton has scored 174 points and had 41 registered against them. Their successes in the various games played were: First round, against Red Star, won 35 points to 3; Gladstone, won 11-0; Masterton, won 34-9; Featherston, won 11-8; Greytown, a drawn game, 12 points each. Second round: Beat Red Star 25-0, beat Gladstone 10-9, beat Masterton 22-0, beat Featherston 14-0. They still have Greytown to play in this round. Altogether Carterton’s four teams have scored 342 points and have had V 56 points recorded against them.
