CARTERTON
BOY SCOUTS AND CUBS ANNUAL MEETING LAST NIGHT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Carterton Boy Scout and' Cub troops was held in the “Times-Age” branch office last evening. There was an attendance of 17 adults. Apologies for absence were received from several residents. In the absence of the chairman who had left the district to reside in Foxton, Mr C. E. White was voted to the chair. Mr L. R. Huntley, Scoutmaster of the Greytown troop, was present by invitation and was accorded a welcome. Reports of the Scoutmaster, Cub Mistress, secretary and the treasurer were read and adopted. The treasurer's report showed a very satisfactory year. After a fairly heavy expenditure a credit balance of £4l Ils lOd was carried forward. Of the amount expended £34 had been paid to'patriotic purposes. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr C. E. White; vice-president, Mrs M. E. Mellish; secretary and treasurer, Miss F. E. Eagle; committee, Mesdames Walsh, Mellish, Patterson, Thompson, Eagle, Misses Herdman and Walsh, Messrs H. T. Ray, C. J. DeLacey, A. Patterson, Fryer, C. Holland, Clapp and Fairbrother, with power to add. Concerning the Scout Den it was reported that the property had been purchased from Mr P. A. Cole, and that renovation of the building was well in hand. In connection with the sale of the right-of-way on the southern side of the building and the section of land at the back thereof, it was decided that a sub-committee, consisting of the chairman and Messrs A. Patterson and Fairbrother be appointed to arrange a sale and report to the next committee meeting. The annual concert was discussed. It was decided to hold it in August and that Mr H. T. Ray arrange for one part of the programme to be given by the Scout boys, and that the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Drama Circle be approached to furnish the second half of the programme on a fiftyfifty basis. It was resolved that in connection with the card parties, that one week euchre be played and in the following week 500.
ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE MEETING. ■ The Totara Lodge of Druids met last night. Arch Druid Bro. B. Neilsen presided and all the officers were present. Two members declared on the sick I funds of the lodge and three off. X, Grand Lodge forwarded information, concerning the Social Security medical scheme, consideration being deferred until the-August quarterly meeting. The Friendly Societies’ Hospital Association gave notice that the annual meeting would be held on July 24 at Masterton. Bros. H. Matson and H. Bassett were elected delegates to represent Totara Lodge. Bro. Harold Goodin reported that he had been discharged from the Masterton Hospital. Bro. J. Hicks advised that he was still an inmate of the Croydon Hospital. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £22 IS were passed for payment. This included £6 10s Social Security sickness benefit. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE DIVISION FORMED. A meeting of those interested in forming a division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade was held in the Borough Council Chambers last night, when the mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over an attendance of 16 men. Superintendent Cooper, of the Masterton Brigade, addressed the meeting and outlined the aims and work of the St. John Association. Keen interest was displayed by all present, and it was decided to form a Carterton Division of the Brigade. Mr H. T. Leete was appointed’ provisional chairman, and the next meeting was fixed for 7.30 p.m. on Thursday. July 17, when it is intended to elect the necessary office bearers and commence the course of training.
PLUNKET SOCIETY CARTERTON BRANCH MEETING. M The monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Plunket Society was held yesterday. There were presenj Mesdames Armstrong, Callender, Dyer, Montgomery and Trapp. An apology for absence was received from Mrs Robinson. • The nurse’s report for June was as. follbws: New cases 2; visits to homes, news cases 6, old cases 61, older children 24; visits to rooms, adults 66, babie? 61, older children 10; test scales lent once; telephone calls 15. The secretary reported that a large class was taking the lectures given by the nurse in connection with the E.P.S. scheme. Accounts amounting to £29 6s were passed for payment. WAR SERVICE WOMEN’S AUXILIARY. A meeting of the committee of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary was held in the Borough Council Chambers yesterday, there being present Mesdames H. E. Crdish (in the chair), W. H. Hall, A. E. Pink and F. L. Barr. An apology for absence was received from Miss O. Wolters. The committee expressed its gratis tude to the Carterton Band for having granted the use of the band room for drill and lectures in connection with the Cycling and Transport Corps. It vzas reported that Miss C. Johnstone’s talks and demonstrations in
connection with home gardening will commence next month. As sufficient trainees are not yet available, it was decided not to commence the transport, classes in the meantime. The Dominion Secretary requested that it should be brought to the notice of members of the auxiliary that there are still vacancies for nurses in mental hospitals. It is hoped that prospective members of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary will fill in their cards without delay, so that particulars of the woman power available may be ascertained. The secretary read a report from Miss C. Berrill, who is in charge of the Cycling Corps, in which she voiced the enthusiasm and interest being displayed by the women and girls who had joined. “Parcel Evening.” Tomorrow evening a “parcel evening” will be held in the Dalefield Hall in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss P. Bambry. Mrs V. J. Ashton’s orchestra will supply the music. Personal Items. Mr D. A. McPhee, of Conolly’s Line, Belvedere, will leave tonight for Christchurch, where he will spend a holiday. Mr W. E. Knowles, manager of the Belvedere Cheese Factory, left yesterday afternoon to spend a holiday in Christchurch. At a social held in the Belvedere Schoolroom, Mr A. H. Callister, chairman of directors of the Belvedere Cheese Factory, accorded a hearty welcome to the district of Mr and Mrs Ammundsen, new settlers to the district. who had until recently resided at Matahiwi.
