SOBER CONFIDENCE
FELT BY FIRST LORD WORK OF NAVY AND AIR FORCE. SUCCESSES AGAINST U-BOATS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY,, July 12. Speaking during the Southend War Weapons Week, the First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr Alexander, said he wished to put before his hearers three matters which give cause for sober confidence at the moment. The first was the serious interference which the Navy and the Royal Air Force jointly were causing the German supply lines to Libya and which must greatly disarrange German plans there. The second was that aircraft of the Coastal and Bomber Commands had been sinking and damaging a large amount of enemy shipping. In fact, the figures of tonnage so attacked were high enough to have an increasingly crippling effect. The third was the encouragement caused to the Naval Staff by recent experiences in the destruction of Üboats. “I am not going to help the enemy by' saying where or when we have sunk them, -or how many we have sunk,” he said, “but I will tell you that during the past few weeks we had particularly successful times."
