GRAIN AND PRODUCE
CANTERBURY MARKETS. POTATO PRICES LOWER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 11. The potato market, which firmed all last week, reached its peak on Saturday morning, when sales of Suttons were made at £lO, and in cases even higher, and sales of white and Dakotas were reported as high as £9 10s. At the beginning of this week there was a slackening in the inquiry from the north, mainly because it was known that a boat would load at the end of the week with about 10,000 sacks. Another boat will go in the middle of next week, and in the meantime the market has slackened off. Values have not come back sensationally and today Suttons were worth £9 10s, with whites and Dakotas at £9, both prices being nominal in the absence of any great amount of business. Most of the Canterbury crop has now been lifted, and on the average it has turned out well. It appears certain from all reports that there will be no shortage and good prices are welcome to the growers, who had a disappointing run last season. Oats are offering very sparingly and it appears that most of the crop that would have come on to the markets has already been dealt with. Prices are unchanged. Principally because of the exceptionally mild autumn, the demand for chaff usually noticeable about this time of the year, has not developed. The small seeds markets are very quiet.
