GIRLS’ HOCKEY

WAIRARAPA v DANNEVIRKE. MATCHES GN COLLEGE GROUND YESTERDAY. In spite of rain and heavy grounds yesterday the annual hockey matches between the girls of Wairarapa College and Dannevirke High School resulted in two very good games, each school getting one win and each scoring 6 goals. , In the senior- game Dannevirke were definitely superior, their team showing better understanding and more finished movements. Their difference was most apparent in the forwards where Dannevirke were particularly strong. Their bully, June Williams, distributed the play well and was always at hand when a shot was called for, two of her scoring strokes being spectacular. The most effective of the forwards in the field play was the right wing, Rangi Paewai, whose runs down the line left the local backs standing. Her centres also were strong and well directed. The Dannevirke captain, Heleny Zadey, on the left wing, also put up a good performance but was closely marked by the home captain, Lucy Wilton, who was easily the most effective of the College team. The other Dannevirke player most worthy of special praise was the goalie, Jean Norton, who cleared such shots as came her way so that the ball was well out of the danger’ zone. Betty Leslie was a very safe half-back.

In the home team the forwards all did some good individual play but did not combine effectively. Ruby Steven at centre-half, played a solid game and had plenty to do. Both full-backs, Shirley Russell and Evelyn McGovern, gave good displays except for occasional speculating.

In the first half Dannevirke scored twice (J. Williams and R. Russell) while in the second half they added four more (J. Williams 3 and H. Zadey). Wairarapa’s one goal was shot by L. Wilton.

In the junior game Wairarapa had the upper hand throughout, though Dannevirke put up a stubborn defence, their goalie, Ngaire Whiblen, being kept on her toes from start to finish. Had it not been for her sound defence the score would have been doubled. She was ably supported by Dorothy Allarclice (captain) at left full-back. The local team was an even combination, each player doing her bit effectively. Wairarapa scored twice in the first spell and three times in second (J. Couper 1, M. Fly 2, Norma Stains 2. Miss Noreen Page and Mr R. S. Moor controlled the games very effectively. Miss F. D. Bingham and Miss L. M. McNeur of the Dannevirke High School staff, accompanied the visiting teams, who returned home this morning.
