FEATHERSTON

BOROUGH AFFAIRS MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council was held on Thursday night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr J. W. Card), Councillors G. A. Farrier, W. J. Boston, B. E. Donald, C. C. Kenward, H. W. Cundy and T. G. Hardie. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors R. R P.. Hardy, S. P. Batchelor and C. R. Skipage. The treasurer submitted the following financial statement: —District Fund Ac., cr., £626 Ils lOd; Cemetery Ac., cr. £5B 19s; Domain Ac., cr. £3l 2s; Mayor’s' Relief Fund Ac., cr. £B4 14s 9d; Water Supply Loan, 1936 Ac., cr. £173 15s lOd; Library Ac., cr. £7l 16s 6d. The receipts since the last meeting totalled £256 14s 7d. The Town Clerk, Masterton, wrote in regard to the visit of Mr J. M. A. Hott, concerning the saving of waste material. It was decided to request that the council be advised of the arrangements made. The Director of National Service Department wrote asking that special precautions be taken when using highways for E.P.S. training; also stating the action required in training school staffs and children in the case of emergency. Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., wrote stating that he would get in touch with the Minister at once concerning the danger in connection with blasting operations near the Featherston cemetery. Mrs A. Donald wrote offering the council a framed photograph of her late husband, Mr Q. Donald, to be hung in the Anzac Hall. The, offer was accepted with thanks. The Masterton County Council forwarded a cheque for £52 16s Id being the Featherston council’s share of heavy traffic fees to May 31. The Masterton County Council wrote stating that the agreement for the allocation of heavy traffic fees had expired, and wishing to know if the council would agree to carry on for a further 2 years on the same basis of boroughs 25 per cent and counties 75 per cent. It was decided to agree to the present arrangement. The borough of Takapuna wrote asking the council’s support to a proposal concerning the issue of free railway passes to all members of the armed forces. The letter* was received. PERSONAL ITEMS The Rev. J. R. Higgs, acting vicar of St. John's parish, will be away from Featherston from Monday to I* riday of next week, attending the annual synod of the diocese of Wellington. Miss Jean Jensen and Miss Gwen Browne are. spending a holiday in Christchurch as the guests of Mrs P. Gailbraith. The funeral of the late Mrs Dodgson took place at the Featherston cemetery yesterday afternoon. The Rev. J. R. Higgs officiated at the graveside. The pall bearers were Messrs Peter Habib, Andrew Mclvor, W. Hodder, Senr., and W. Hodder, Junr. .
