CARTERTON
WOMEN’S DIVISION ENJOYABLE CONCERT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Drama Circle of the Womens Division of the Farmers’ Union held a most enjoyable concert in the Masonic Hall last evening, there being a large attendance. Mrs D. Walsh, president of the Drama Circle, extended a hearty welcome to those present, and expressed the hope that they would have an enjoyable time. A splendid programme was provided. Mrs K. H. Reid played the accompaniments for all the items.
The opening chorus, “God Defend New Zealand,” was followed by the solo, “The Lights of London,” nicely rendered by Mrs C. Rofe, the choir taking up the chorus. The other items were:—Recitation, Mrs Ken Hodder; duet, Mrs W. Linton and Mrs McLean; playette, “0.H.M.5.,” the characters being excellently taken by Mrs K. Hodder (postmistress), Mrs O’Keefe (Daisy), Mrs McLean (Mrs Dodds), Mrs Thompson (Mrs Pitcheley), Mrs H. E. Ordish (Mrs Marlow), Mrs Harrington (Cymphia); part song, Misses Barbara and K. Reid, June and Peggy Daysh; “Nautical Notions” was well rendered, with the singing of the following choruses, “The Fleet’s in Port Again,” “Pop-Eye the Sailor Man” (a splendid imitation by Mrs Daysh), “'Wings Over the Navy,” “Sailor’s Hornpipe,” “Anchor’s Aweigh,” “Red, White and Blue”; a sketch entitled “Hacket’s Home,” the characters being excellently portrayed by Mrs Peters (Mrs Hacket), Mrs Archer (Mr Hacket), 'Mrs Mellish (Mrs Chickenbotham), Mrs Stretton salesman).
A competition, guessing the names of the pei’sons rendering items behind the screen, was won by Mrs W. George, Mr Ron Daysh and Miss Nancy Daysh. Mrs Ordish, president of the W.D.F.U., thanked those present for their attendance, and read a letter received from soldiers who had partaken of cakes, etc., forwarded to the Y.M.C.A. for Sunday teas at various times. The letter was signed by many soldiers, thanking the ladies for their thoughtful; action and saying how much they appreciated the cakes. She also announced that £9 had been received for admission at the door that night. This sum would be used for purchasing navy wool to knit comforts for the Navy. The money was handed to Mrs H. Hodder, who. suitably returned thanks. Supper was handed round, and the singing of the National Anthem brought the gathering to a close. Boy Scouts’ Annual Meeting. Citizens of Carterton who are interested in the Boy Scout movement are reminded that the annual meeting will be held in the “Times-Age” office on Monday evening next, at 8 o’clock. The annual report and balance-sheet will be submitted, and the election of a committee will take place. Rainfall at Carrington. Mr J. A. Roberts, of Carrington, reports as follows concerning the rainfall at Carrington in June: The heaviest fall occurred on June 16, 86 points. The total for the month vzas 5.13 inches. For the same period last year the fall was 1.76 inches. Poultry Show. The poultry show was brought to a conclusion last evening. Most of the birds were taken away last night, with the exception of those from a distance, most of which will be sent on to .the Hutt Valley show to compete in the New Zealand championships. Dance at Belvedere. A most enjoyable dance was held in the Belvedere Schoolroom last evening, and, despite the inclement weather, there was a large attendance. Music for the dancing was provided by Mrs Rogers, of Dalefield, and a much appreciated extra was played by Miss R. Jimmieson. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr McGuiness and Miss Matthews. Supper was supplied by the ladies of the district.
