RAIDS ON MALTA
HEAVY LOSSES INFLICTED ON ENEMY THREE ITALIAN PLANES SHOT DOWN. NINE OTHERS BADLY DAMAGED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 1.0 p.m.) RUGBY. July 11. Enemy raids on Malta resulted in heavy losses to the raiders, according to an agency report from Malta on Friday, which states: “Last night a few enemy aircraft attacked the island and searchlights were in action. Some bombs were dropped in outlying districts, causing no damage or casualties. This afternoon a huge formation of the enemy attacked the island. They were intercepted and split up by our fighters. A small formation, however, made a low-flying attack which resulted in light military damage but no casualties. One enemy fighter was probably damaged and three Macchi 200’s were shot down into the sea and nine others badly damaged. Some are very unlikely to have reached their bases. No damage was suffered by our fighters.”
