The Hon If. T. Armstrong. Minister of Public Works, returned to Wellington from the south yesterday. Mr J. Kennedy, Herbert Street, Masterton, has been advised that his son, Sgt.. Allan M. Kennedy, is reported missing.
A former member of Parliament, Mr R. A. Wright, has been selected as the official National Party candidate for the Wellington West electorate (formerly Wellington Suburbs).
Advice has been received in Masterton that Private H. F. Hill has been posted as missing in Crete. Private Hill was the first man to enlist in Masterton under the voluntary system.
The friends of Mrs W. Michell, Villa Street, Masterton, will regret to learn of the death of her brother, Mr Charles O'Donnell, which occurred at Greytown on Thursday after a long illness. Mr and Mrs A. E. Clarke, of Mauriceville, have received advice that their fourth son. Driver C. E. Clarke is reported as missing. Driver Clarke was the first man in the Mauriceville district to enlist with the forces. The Hon P. C. Webb, Minister of' Labour, returned to Wellington from the south yesterday. He left today for Auckland, where he is to open the first footwear trade school established in New Zealand. The ceremony will be held on Monday afternoon.
The death occurred yesterday of Marion Evelyn, the 16-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Petersen, of Olive Street, Masterton. The late Miss Petersen was a pupil at Wairarapa College and formerly attended the Masterton Central School. She was very popular among her friends. The funeral took place this afternoon. The Rev H. H. Jeffreys, Methodist chaplain to the Auckland fortress troops, has been transferred to Burnham mobilisation camp. His successor will be the Rev J. C. Draper, of the Takapuna Methodist Church. The Rev W. A. Scott, of the Turua Anglican Church, and the Rev Father N. Berridge, of the Gisborne Roman Catholic Church, have been appointed chaplains at the Ngaruawahia mobilisation camp.
Major R. S. Halliwell, M.C.. N.Z.S.C.. assistant quartermaster-general, Northern Military District, has been appointed acting-commandant of the Papakura mobilisation camp to relieve Colonel C. S. White, V.D., N.Z.T.S., who has been transferred temporarily to the Expeditionary Force. Major W. H. Allen. N.Z.T.S., of the Infantry Training Battalion at Papakura. has been appointed, quartermaster at the Cambridge Territorial Force reinforcement camp.
Another of the fast diminishing band of pioneers has passed away in the person of Mr John Cameron, whose death occurred at Tiro Tiro Road, Levin. The deceased was 84 years of age, having been born at Tihitarata. Lower Valley. He took up farming as a career, and in 1895 married Miss Mary Harrison, of Martinborough, and took her to Shannon, where he had purchased a block of bush land. Farming in Shannon until 1920, he retired to Levin, where he resided until his death. His wife predeceased him about five years ago. At the Racing Conference in Wellington yesterday the following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr A. S. Elworthy, vice-president. Mr H. R. 11. Chalmers: executive committee. Messrs W. Claud Motion (Auckland), D. E. Wanklyn (Canterbury), A. C. Hanlon, K.C. (Dunedin), T. E. Coates (Greymouth), F. J. Kelly (Hawke's Bay), W. T. Hazlett (Southland), G. C. Glenn (.Wanganui), C. W. Tringham (Wellington), and the Hon J. S. McLeod (Taranaki). Mr G. D. Beatson (Hawke’s Bay) did not seek re-election.
Mr and Mrs R. H. Pearson, Pownall Street. Masterton. received advice last night that their son, Private Thomas Lewis Pearson had been posted as missing. Private Pearson went through the campaign in Greece and was sent to a camp in Egypt immediately after with an injured knee. He later wrote to his parents stating that he was going to headquarters for instructional duties. It came as a considerable surprise to his parents to learn that he is now missing. Private Pearson, who was educated at St. Patrick’s school, Masterton, was engaged in gardening work prior to his enlistment.
