LOCAL AND GENERAL
Fall From Chair. The three-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs R. N. Shaw, of 12 Wrigley Street, Masterton, was admitted to Masterton Hospital this morning. It is stated that the child fell off a chair at her home and injured her arm. Rush for Silk Stockings. One day this week a further supply of silk stockings was placed on the Wellington market. The news, once out, spread like wildfire. A woman lucky enough to be in at the kill said that grim, determined buyers flocked to the counter like bees round a honey pot. The seller behind the counter told her that in another shop 27 pairs of stockings sold that same day in five minutes. Flag Competition. For the twelfth fortnightly period of the national savings flag competition, which closed on July 7, no changes in regard to the “leading towns” are disclosed, although increased percentages are reported in all cases. For Dominion leadership, pride of place is retained by Raglan, in the Hamilton district, where the magnificent record of 100 per cent success is recorded —the number of national savings depositors equalling in number the local population. In the Wellington district Featherston is the leading town.
Surgeons for Army Work. Because of the heavy demands of the Army authorities for medical men, the National Medical Committee, in co-operation with the University of New Zealand and the Otago Medical School, has introduced a new system which will release 50 per cent of. the house surgeons in the larger hospitals in the Dominion for service with the forces. The scheme has been introduced because of the shortage of doctors for military service, aggravated by the fact that many of the doctors who were with the New Zealanders in Greece and Crete stayed behind to care for the wounded. The men released will have had six months’ experience in hospital work, and theii' [places will be taken by final-year 'medical students.
Racing and the War. The Racing Conference at Wellington yesterday decided to co-operate fully with the Government in the question of holding race meetings during the duration of the war. Man Injured. Mr W. G. Reynolds, of 47 Bentley Street. Masterton, was admitted to hospital on Thursday afternoon. Mr Reynolds, who was working on Mr Speedy's station, cut his hand with a slasher. His condition is satisfactory. Publicity Films. Two films of more than ordinary intrest are to be released in New Zealand shortly, are entitled “Four Corners,” prepared by the British Ministry of Information and the other, by the New Zealand Government, depicting scenes with the New Zealand Forces in the Middle East, including the visit of the Prime Minister. Mr Fraser. The “Four Corners” shows most effectively how the British Dominions are linked with London, the heart of the Empire. Failure to Enrol. A charge of having failed to enrol in the general reserve was preferred against Maurice Benjamin Davis, single, aged 28. truck-driver, in the Magistrates' Court, Wellington, yester'day, before Mr Stout. S.M. A sentence of one month's imprisonment with hard labour was imposed. William Connor of Fishermen’s Co-operative, Ltd., for having employed Davis, an unenrolled reservist, for more than seven days, was fined £25. with costs 13s.
Writ of Habeas Corpus Application. An application for a writ of habeas corpus in respect to Paul Verschaffelt, now in Auckland prison on transfer from the Inebriates’ Home, Roto Roa Island, was made by his counsel, Mr Noble, before Mr Justice Fair in the Auckland Supreme Court yesterday. Messrs Meredith and Smith appeared for the Crown. After hearing Mr Meredith, Mr Justice Fair said that substantially different matters were dealt with by the Minister at the later inquiry. It could not be said that the same offences were twice considered and prisoner was not twice punished for the same offences. The application for the writ of habeas corpus was therefore refused.
