RACING CLUB MONTHLY MEETING OF STEWARDS (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr W. Howard Booth (president) presided over the monthly meeting of stewards of the Carterton Racing Club held, last evening. There were also present Messrs E. J. Matson, J. C. Harp, W. C. Deller, V. L. Robinson, R. G. Kemble, C. Jensen- and the secretary, Mr H. Mortenson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs L. H. Smart, J. Johnston, H. J. Brown, F. C. Yule, P. Bain, P. A. Cole, Geo. Eaton and G. A. Vincent. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £1037. Accounts amounting to £26 odd were passed for payment. Mr F. C. Yule wrote thanking the club for its letter of sympathy regarding his son, who was reported missing. . The chairman and members said that /news had now been received that “* Warrant Officer Yule was a prisoner of war. It was stated that the date applied for for the Carterton meeting on September 13 would be granted. Mr P. A. Cole, who has held 'the office of treasurer for several years, wrote tendering his resignation. The meeting unanimously decided that Mr Cole be asked to continue his duties until after the race meeting in September. The secretary was instructed to forward a letter of congratulation to Mr T. R. George upon his success in again winning the trainers’ premiership in New Zealand, an honour he had now held for seven consecutive seasons.
It was decided that the annual general meeting of members be held on Saturday, August 23. The programme of events for the September meeting was considered, and it was decided that it be approved as set out. The stake money amounted to £BB5. All the races on the programme will be worth £lOO or more. It was reported that two valuable trophies had been promised, and these are to be added to the stake money in two races. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING OF MEMBERS. The Carterton Women’s Institute met yesterday in the Masonic Hall when Mrs A. Adams presided over a good attendance of members. A letter was received from the secretary of the A.N.A. Club, Wellington, expressing gratitude for the Institute’s offer to forward a hamper every three months. A letter was received from the Wai--\rarapa Federation expressing appreciation of the Institute’s catering for the s'chool for officers held on June 13. A . roll call of Home Hints, “say or pay 3d,” brought out a number of useful hints and threepences. Miss M. Lawrence was presented with a dainty shoulder spray as was also Miss Berrill, the accompanist. Mrs J. Stewart gave a very interesting demonstration on the making of paper flowers, at the conclusion of which Mrs Adams thanked Mrs Stewart and presented her with a shoulder spray. The competitions were judged by Mrs W. Nielsen (Dalefield) and resulted as follows: —Eggless cake: Mrs W. P. Williams 1, Mrs G. Reading 2, Miss E. Court 3. Peanut biscuts: Mrs E. Nix 1, Mrs A. Adams 2, Mrs L. Hurndell 3. The products of these competitions are to be sent to the A.N.A. Club, Wellington. Shoulder spray: Mrs M. J. Woods 1, Mrs E. H. Hawker 2. Mrs G. Steffert 3. It was resolved that members provide a patchwork quilt to be handed in to the Lady Galway Guild. A pleasant gathering concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. Hockey Teams. Green, Joyce Goodin. • Heavy Downpour of Rain. A very heavy downpour of rain set in last evening just prior to 7.30 o'clock and the water channels in the streets were soon overflowing, the footpaths in many places being flooded. Women’s War Service Auxiliary. Great interest and enthusiasm was displayed by all the women and girls who attended the physical training class held at the State Theatre last evening under the auspices of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary. Church of England services will be held on Sunday at Ahiaruhe at 11 a.m. and at Parkvale at 2 p.m. Dance at Belvedere. The Belvedere schoolroom tonight will be the scene of another of the district’s popular dances. There should be a good attendance. The proceeds will be devoted to patrioticm purposes. Personal Items. Messrs J. W. Card and W. Howard Booth left this morning for Wellington, where they will attend the N.Z. Racing Conference. Pte. Athol George, who left Carterton with an early contingent from New Zealand, and who suffered an injury in England and has been in hospital for the past 5 or 6 months, arrived back in Wellington yesterday. He was taken to the Wellington Hospital where it is expected he will remain for some time. Incidents at Show. At the Wairarapa Poultry Show last night several young men threw wheat from bags all over the room. Being remonstrated with by an. official, they then plucked tail feathers from prize birds and displayed them in their coats. The feathers were taken from them. The matter has been placed in the hands of the police. 'i Women’s Division Concert. The Social Club of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union will hold a concert tonight in the Masonic Hall, Holloway Street. As the proceeds are to be devoted to the purchase of wool for knitting garments for the Mercantile Marine there should be a large attendance. The prices of admission are: Adults Is 6d, children Cd. Supper will be included in the charge for admission.
