MASTERTON ART CLUB
VARIED WORK CRITICISED LAST NIGHT. Evidence that his helpful criticism is affecting favourably the general standard of club work was given last night, when members of the Masterton Art Club met in good numbers to have their work criticised by the director, Mr S. B. Maclennan, A.R.C.A. This monthly criticism again produced a widely varied number of paintings and drawings, varied not only in media, but in technique and subject. Indicative of this are two of the oils with which Mr Maclennan dealt. H. Thompson, a new member, showed a clear-cut landscape of Castlepoint Lighthouse and Rocks in which the treatment of a pale blue sky particularly was impressive, and J. D. Whyte submitted a self-portrait oil, unusual in execution but achieving its effect uncomprisingly. Humour too was on show for Esther Bellis contributed a series of pen-and-ink drawings illustrating amusingly and with originality “the lighter side of farm life.” Miss I. Gordon will talk about “The Progress of Photography” at the club’s next meeting on July 24.
