CUTTINGS
HOW TO STRIKE THEM. Masterton gardeners will find that a good compost for striking cuttings consists of sifted loam, leaf mould with a liberal sprinkling of sharp sand. The pots should be clean and a few broken crocks should be placed in the bottom for drainage. Over these arrange a thin layer of the rougher siftings of the leafmould to ensure a free outlet for water. Fill the pots to within half an inch of the rim and .finish with a thin sprinkling of sand. When holes are made for the cuttings, sand will percolate in the hole and assist in the formation of roots. All cuttings should be fixed firmly in the soil, and care should be taken to see that the base of the cuttings rest on the soil. Any that may be suspended by reason of the holes being too deep, will fail to root.
