Boxinn Cup Won by Mastertonian. Corporal J. Ford, of Masterton, who is with the New Zealand forces in Egypt, recently won a silver cup given as the first prize in a boxing competition. Pahiatua Street Lights The Mayor stated at the monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council this week that the Tararua Power Board had advised that the street lights in Pahiatua would now remain lit until 3 a.m., instead of until midnight. Linesman Electrocuted. A tragedy occurred at Waitati yesterday afternoon when Peter Robinson, linesman employed by the Otago Power Board, was electrocuted while working in a sub-station. Robinson came in-contact with a 6000-volt insulator and fell or was thrown back, but was caught by a companion, who lowered him to the floor. Artificial respiration was continued by doctors for two hours without success. Patriotic Matters. At the meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council this week a letter was received from the Masterton Borough Council extending an invitation to all Town and County Clerks throughout the Wairarapa to attend a meeting in Masterton on July 21 to discuss matters relating to Home Guard, E.P.S. and patriotic matters. It was decided that the Mayor, Crs. Judd, Watts and Carthew attend the meeting. Extension of Hours.
The Biscuit Industry Labour Legislation Suspension Order, 1941, No. 2, gazetted last night, provides for extension of hours of work of women and boys employed in the biscuit industry on other than shift work, subject to agreement between the local union and the employer. A previous order made similar provision in respect of women and boys employed on shift work. The present order is effective from July 7. Auckland Burglaries. Several burglaries occurred in the Auckland suburbs last night. The Mount Albert Post Office was entered and the strongroom door blown open with gelignite. More than £lOO in cash was stolen. From the S.O.S. Service Station, Otahuhu, the safe was removed to a gully and blown open. There was no cash in the safe, but 150 petrol coupons were stolen. Hellaby’s butcher’s shop in Avondale was entered and a 30cwt safe removed. The safe was found today at Blockhouse Bay. The door had been blown open, but the safe did not contain money. The Invincible Store at Papatoetoe was also entered, and tobacco worth £5 stolen.
