BOY SCOUTS SIXTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The local Boy Scout Troop and Cub Pack celebrated their sixth birthday with a party held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall last evening. There was a large attendance of parents and well-wishers and the function proved very enjoyable. Also in attendance were Messrs A. Campbell Pearce (chairman of the Wairarapa District Executive), H. J. Fairchild (District Secretary), J. Kerslake (secretary of the Mokatoa Troop) and A. W. Allsop (District Scoutmaster) .
The first hour of the entertainment was taken up by the Cubs, who, under the supervision of Cubmaster H. Smith, ably assisted by Assistant Cubmaster R. Wyeth, demonstrated their skill, at signalling, drill and knot-tying in a manner which reflected great credit on their instructors. Several of • the boys rendered recitations, songs and instrumental items, all of which were well received.
Cubmaster Smith briefly voiced his appreciation to the parents for the continued interest in the movement and trusted that the teaching given the boys met with their approval. An impressive ceremony took place when Scoutmaster A. H. Gray invested a number of Tenderfoot Ecouts into the Troop. After repeating the Scout Law, Mr Gray congratulated and welcomed them into the troop. Those invested were Len Brown, George Waterreus, Gordon Darbyshire, Monty Davis, Maurice Russell, George and Rex Morriss, Harry Payne, Ernie Hooper. In introducing and welcoming the District Officers Scoutmaster Gray thanked them for the interest shown by them in the Eketahuna Troop.
In acknowledging the welcome Mr Campbell Pearce said that he and his fellow officers were delighted to be present at the Eketahuna Troop's birthday party. He congratulated those responsible for the highly efficient manner in which they had trained the local boys and trusted that the scouting movement in Eketahuna would be kept going. He wished the Troop many more happy birthdays. Prolonged applause greeted the announcement that Mr and Mrs W. Curry and family had presented the Troop with a substantial first-aid outfit as a birthday gift. On behalf of the troop Mi- Gray suitably acknowledged the gift. 1 Presentations were made to ActingScoutmaster J. Curry (who left today to take up Air Force duties) by Mr M. W. Priest, chairman of the committee, and Troop Scribe .E. Drysdale. On behalf of the committee, Mr Priest stated that Mr Curry had been a member of the Troop since its inception and during that time he had been a keen and honest member. In handing Mr Curry an Eversharp pencil, Mr Priest wished him good luck in the future, and hoped he would be back soon to take over his duties with the Troop. Troop Scribe Drysdale, in handing Mr Curry a pocket wallet on behalf of members of the troop, thanked him for the interest he had always shown
on their behalf. Mr Curry suitably replied. Supper was then dispensed by many helpers and fully enjoyed. Mr Priest lit the six candles on the birthday cake, and called upon Cud Morriss to extinguish them which he accomplished in approved style. Mr Priest then cut the cake, every person present receiving a piece. The ingredients for the cake were donated by Mrs O. Walton, it was baked by Mr J. A. Taylor and decorated by Mrs R. and Miss G.
