Williams 98, E. O’Neale 98, N. McNamara 94, I. Feast 96, K. McKenzie 93, L. Rasmussen 93, M. Hodder 94, A. Hodder 97, A. Cook 95, H. Gray 93, H. McNamara 90. COUNTRY CONSTABLES THEIR WORK PRAISED. At the last sitting of the Magistrates’ Court, Mr J. W. Card, as the senior member of the Bar, referred to the approaching retirement of Constable McLeod, this being his last appearance as clerk of the Court, and stated that his 25 years of association with the Court had been one of satisfaction to all who had occasion to do business there. On behalf of the legal profession and also of the Justices of the Peace—he belonged to both, and as in his capacity of Mayor he was also a J.P.—he wished Mr and Mrs McLeod pleasant years in their retirement. Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., joined with the profession and Justices in wishing Mr and Mrs McLeod happiness. He stated that he often marvelled at the efficiency displayed in knowledge of Court procedure by constables in country districts, whose duties included court work. They were paid merely a nominal sum in addition to their ordinary pay, and were expected to be as efficient as those in larger courts who were trained for the work. There were some good men in the smaller courts and Constable McLeod was one of them. The members of the legal profession who were also present were Messrs Lawson (Featherston), Biss (Wellington), Blathwayt (Martinborough), McKenzie (Masterton) and Curtis (Greytown). Obituary.
