WASTE PAPER

arrangements for collection IN MASTERTON. ORGANISATION BY ROTARY CLUB. A brief outline of the arrangements which would be made in Masterton for the collection of waste paper was given by Mr H. H. Daniell, chairman of the Rotary community service committee, al the Masterton club’s meeting today. Mr Daniell reported that as the result of the recent visit by Mr J. M. A. Hott, a member of the National Council for the Reclamation of Waste, he had been in touch with the local committee. He stressed the fact that the work would have to be carried out without expense, owing to the narrow margin of profit on the sale of waste paper. A shed had been cleared for storage purposes at the Masterton gas-works but owing to transport and collection difficulties a central depot would be necessary. It was proposed to use every petrol station and garage as a receiving depot. Those who wished to give paper could leave it at a garage or petrol station without going out of their way. All the depots were in handy situations around the town. Mr E. Jenkins had made storage available opposite the Public Trust Office, and Mr G. M. Ross would keep the key to the room in his office which was nearby. The paper would be collected from the receiving depots and taken to the central depot and subsequently railed to Wellington. Mr Daniell said he was informed that much valuable heavy quality paper was being burnt by commercial houses. That paper would be of value for packing purposes. Considerable time and sorting would be saved if donors folded and tied up their contributions.
