Body Found in Lake. The body of Mrs Clara Emily Mary Bingham, aged about 80, was found in the lake in Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, on Monday. There were no signs of injury. Mfs Bingham was a widow who lived alone. Boy Fatally Injured. Severe concussion, from which he later died, was received by a nine-year-old schoolboy when the bicycle he was riding was involved in a collision with a motor car at Mount Eden last night. The victim was Ronald James McMillan, son of Mr William McMillan, Grafton Road. He was taken to hospital, where he died an hour later. Bowlers’ Patriotic Effort. Despite calls made on behalf of the various patriotic funds, bowlers had contributed £BlO through the Wellington Bowling Centre, and an additional £4OO through the various clubs, to the patriotic funds, said the president of the centre, Mr T. Lock (Khandallah), at the annual meeting of delegates of the centre last night. Medical Benefits. Notification that, in the event of lodges accepting subsidy for doctor's benefit from the Social Security Fund, the Canterbury division of the British Medical Association had advised its members to terminate their contracts with lodges in conformity with the terms of their agreements, was made through the Grand Lodge to a meeting of the Star of Ashburton Druids’ Lodge on Monday evening. Optimist Club Tea. The weekly meeting of the Masterton Optimist Club was held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms last night. A fair attendance of members sat down to tea, which was presided over by the Chief Smiler, Mr R. Baikie. Following the song session led by the Rev. H. Taepa, with Optimist E. C. Coddington at the piano, impromptu speeches were held and proved particularly entertaining. At the conclusion of the meeting a bright programme was arranged for next week’s meeting. Mi’ D. Mills was elected to membership. Threatened Strike Averted.

The firm stand taken by the Minister of National Service, Mr Semple, coupled with his appeal to Auckland bus drivers, averted yesterday the threatened night-time strike of members of the Auckland Drivers’ Union against the motor vehicle lighting restrictions. Buses, with reduced lights, ran on the usual routes last night, though at a reduced speed of 20 miles an hour in some instances. A meeting of the union has been called for today. It is expected that a decision to continue night driving with reduced lighting, but at a reduced speed in the interests of safety will be made. Plunket Society Subscriptions.

Maori Found on Road. Found lying on the main road 16 miles north of Wanganui, near Maxwell swimming pool, with severe head injuries, a Maori, Kirihimete Rakeikingi, aged 21, was brought to the Wanganui Public Hospital yesterday by the free ambulance. His condition was reported last night to be critical. Rakeikingi, who lived in Maxwell, was found at 6.30 a.m. by a commercial traveller, William Robertson, of Auckland, who was on his way to Hawera. Rakeikingi visited the house of a neighbour about half a mjle from his home on Monday night. He left there at 10.30 p.m., and did not return home. The Wanganui police are keeking information from motorists who 'were in the locality on Monday night.
