For- some weeks past the Railway Department has been breaking up steel and iron junk by means of blasting near the cemetery. The residents nearby complained of the nuisance caused in the shaking of buildings by some of the heavy blasts. The Borough Council laid complaints in this connection and in regard to the worst feature of Ihe operations, namely, the danger to people nearby from Hying pieces of steel and iron. Several large pieces, three of them over 21bs. in weight, have been thrown into the cemetery. During last week the players on the golf links about a quarter of a mile away were alarmed through flying metal, one piece burying itself at a player’s feet just as he was about to take a shot. Another passed over the heads of two players, coming to.earth nearby. The Council complained to the contractors who referred the matter to the Railway Department. The Department in reply stated that it had made investigations and that the people were unduly alarmed. The Council failing to get satisfaction from the Department are appealing to the Minister through the member for the district.
