CONGRATULATED BY ARMY COUNCIL ON BRILLIANT ACHIEVEMENTS IN MIDDLE EAST. EGYPTIAN PREMIER'S PRAISE. I British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 6. The following cablegram has been sent from London by the Secretary of War to General Sir Archibald Wavell : —“On behalf of the Army Council 1 desire to take this opportunity of congratulating yon most cordially on your brilliant achievements as Commander-in-Uhiel' in the Middle East, to thank you for the spirit of loyal co-op-eration you have shown to your colleagues here at the War Office, and to wish you every good fortune in your new appointment.”
In a newspaper interview today the Prime Minister of Egypt, Hussein Sirry Pasha, said: “I have been in contact with General Wavell since he came to Egypt, as I was then Minister of Defence, and I found him one of the great men of the war and a most giftedgeneral. In critical hours General Wavell was always absolutely confident of victory and in his troops, and he used to meet new developments with calm and courage that deserve respect. There is no doubt that General Wavell will for ever find a distinguished place among the great generals in history.”
