A Moscow communique at midday, dealing with the night fighting, states: “Our troops in the Ostrov sector inflicted considerable losses on enemy tanks. “There was fierce fighting throughout the night in the Polotsk area, while the enemy was trying to cross the western Dvina. We repulsed all attacks with great enemy losses. “The enemy's mechanised forces in the Lepel sector took up the defensive as a result of our tank offensive. “We frustrated an attempt by the enemy’s mechanised forces to advance in the Novograd-Volynsk sector and inflicted heavy losses.” NO ESSENTIAL CHANGE IN POSITION OF RUSSIAN TROOPS. DURING LATEST FIGHTING. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.23 a.m.) RUGBY, July 7. The latest news of Russian counter-attacks and successful Russian resistance to German thrusts is contained in a Russia communique broadcast at midday. It states: “During the night of July 6, fighting continued in the Ostrov, Polotsk, Lepel and Novograd-Vo-lynsk sectors. No essential change occurred in the position of our troops at the fronts. “In the direction of Ostrov, our troops repulsed repeated attempts by enemy motorised units to break through north-eastwards. In the Bessarabian sector, the enemy, having suffered great losses, was thrown back to his starting point. In the remaining sectors, fighting of local importance took place and reconnaissance was carried out.”
