Frost in Masterton

A frost of 6.9 degrees was .registered in Masterton this morning. Taken Over By Government. The taking over by the Government of the mine and all other property of the Blackball Coal Company was announced last night at Greymouth by the Minister of Mines, Mr Webb, to an enthusiastic meeting of Blackball townspeople. All the mine employees have been placed on piecework. “The Dover Road.” There was a large and appreciative audience at the concluding performance of the Little Theatre Society s production, “The Dover Road, ’ at the Opera House, Masterton, last night. At the conclusion of the performance Mr H. Mackenzie Douglas thanked patrons for their attendance. He expressed the wish that the already growing membership list might be added to. Waitemata By-Election. When nominations for the Waitemata by-election closed at noon yesterday five had been received, as follows: —Mrs M. M. Dreaver, official Labour; Mr N. V. Douglas, Democratic Labour; Mr W. B. Darlow, Independent; Mr H. T. Head,, retired farmer; and Mr P. R. Gardner, farmer. The by-election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Captain Lyon will be held on Saturday, July 19. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Barclay, arrived from Wellington yesterday and will take part in the campaign. * The secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party, Mr M. Moohan, arrived from Wellington on Sunday.
