WELFARE LEAGUE

MEETING IN MASTERTON .ACTIVITIES AMONG BLIND PEOPLE. HOSPITAL TRAINING SCHEME. The monthly meeting of the Women's National Welfare League was held in Masterton yesterday afternoon. Miss Kummer presided. There were also present Mesdames L. Hunter, A. Carruthers, H. E. Pither, S. McCracken. T. F. Watson, R. C. Drummond, F. Reynolds, H. P. Harrison, S. J. Munn, S. Fletcher, E. J. Brown. A. W. McKenzie, and S. N. Kilgour, Misses H. D. Grant, Bellis, Boddington, Wilson and M. Cameron. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames W. Andrew. G. H. Collie, and Misses Vallance and Guild. Reference was made to the work of the late Dr. J. A. Cowie. A motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives. Reference was also made to the fact that a son of Mrs E. J. Coleman, a member of the league, was missing in Crete. The wish was expressed that better news would soon be heard. Miss Bellis reported that two visits had been paid to the Masterton Hospital. Cake and flowers and the usual teas to the inmates of Ward 6 had been dispensed. Mrs Drummond and Miss Bellis were appointed visiting members for July. A letter of appreciation was received from the former Matron Miss M. F. Barnett. Mrs Pither reported on the work carried out for the blind. Cases had been visited and orders received for goods. A day’s outing for some cases had proved enjoyable. Mrs Carruthers stated that she was packing parcels for the A.N.A. Club, Wellington, for July. Mrs McKenzie reported on the social welfare work carried out. Clothing, food, bedding, etc., had been given to the needy.

A cordial welcome to Mrs E. J. Brown and Miss Helen Grant was extended by the president. Miss Grant was congratulated on her appointment as Matron of Masterton Hospital. An apology, for absence was received from the sub-matron, Miss Brown. Miss Kummer referred to the training scheme for an Emergency Hospital. Anyone wishing to learn hospital laundry work, etc., was asked to communicate with Miss M. Diggins. Thanks were expressed to the Guides and Brownies for gifts of clothing.
