SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CARD TOURNAMENT. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a fair attendance at the fortnightly “500” evening held in the bandroom on Thursday evening under the auspices of the Home-and School Association. The winners were: Ladies, Mesdames Edwards 1, Pinfold 2; men, Messrs Lee 1, Collerton, Junr. 2. WOMEN’S DIVISION CARTERTON BRANCH MEETING. Mrs. H. E. Ordish presided over a meeting of the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held yesterday. Miss B. Arcus was in charge of the “Ditty” bags. It was decided to hold a working bee at the Carterton Railway Station at 10 a.m. on July 25 for the purpose of attending to the shrubs that were recently planted there. It was resolved to continue the branch’s quota of soldiers’ parcels for overseas. It was decided to hold a shop day in Carterton on Friday, August 8, the funds from which will be credited to the Division. Members are asked to keep in view the Social Club Concert on August 11. Mrs. Harold Hodder read her report, and a large amount of knitted comforts were brought for soldiers. The monthly competitions resulted: Eggless ginger bread, Mrs. McKenzie 1, Mrs Campbell 2, Miss Arcus 3. Ginger bread made with eggs, Mrs. Court 1, Mrs McKenzie 2 and 3. (The judge was Mrs M. F. King). Blooms: Mrs G. Couper 1 and 3, Mrs. E. W. Allen 2. Shrubs: Mrs G. Couper 1 and 2, Mrs. E. W. Allen 3. Best parsnip: Mrs. George 1, Mrs. McKenzie 2, Mrs Peters 3. (Mrs. E. H. Hawker was the judge.) Mrs. M. E. Mellish was the winner of the wandering shilling. The hostesses were Mesdames K. Hodder, P. Hodder, E. L. Rayner, Linton, Mellish and Peters. Farewell Social. The Carrington School was filled last evening when the settlers gathered to pid good-bye to Mr and Mrs B. E. Clark and family. During the evening, Mr. W. Wilson, chairman of the Carrington Dairy Company, referred to the long residence of Mr Clark in the district and the esteem in which he and Mrs. Clark were held. Mr. Wilson asked Mr. and Mrs. Clark to accept an eight-day chiming clock. To the children of Mr. and Mrs. Clark he handed pencil cases. Mr Clark suitably returned thanks. ( The time was taken up with dancing ’to music supplied by Mr. M. Edwards, assisted by Miss Lola Hopkins and Mr Joe Parker. Mr. A. Card was an efficient M.C. Supper was supplied by the ladies of the district. . Memorial Service. . Members of the Carterton Football Club and of the Manchester Unity Order of Odd Fellows’ are invited to attend a memorial service to the late Pte. A. R. Steffert, of the Second New Zealand Echelon, who died from wounds received in the recent battle of Crete. Dance and Card Party. The Parkvale Hall is sure to be well filled tonight when the Parkvale Patriotic Committee will hold another of its social gatherings. Good prizes will be given for the winners of cards in both the ladies’ and men’s sections. First class music for dancing will be supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton's orchestra. R.S.A. Ball. The annual ball of the Returned Soldiers’ Association will be held in the King's Theatre on Monday evening. A working bee will attend to the polishing of the floor and other arrangements at the weekend. Cycling Corps. A meeting of all women and girls interested in the formation of- a War Auxiliary Cycle Corps will be held in the Dalefield Dairy Company’s building on Tuesday at 7.30 p.m. Men for Camp. Yesterday afternoon a large number of residents gathered at the Carterton railway station and gave the men who! left for the Trentham Military Camp an enthusiastic send off. Pipe Major B. Johns played a number of Scotch airs on the railway station platform. i Personal Item. ! Mrs L. Goodin, of Kent Street, Carterton, left yesterday for Te Kauwhata where she will stay with her son. j
