AIR FORCE
OPERATING IN WESTERN DESERT BROAD IMPERIAL CHARACTER. NOW JOINED BY SOUTH AFRICANS (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.10 aim.) RUGBY, July 4. The broad Imperial character of the R.A.F. in North Africa is underlined by the arrival there of South African squadrons fresh from their triumphs in Italian East Africa. Besides squadrons from Britain, there are Rhodesians, Australians, New Zealanders and Canadians in the Western Desert, in addition to numbers of Free French. Altogether they comprise a formidable team, and in the Western Desert, as plsewhere, they have proved more than a match for their German and Italian foes. The deeds of Australian fighters in the first Libyan campaign need no recalling, and it was a New Zealand pilot who played a great part in shooting down a big Italian bomber during a daylight raid on Alexandria.
