POINT-BLANK BOMBING
BREMEN ATTACKED IN DAYLIGHT From Height of Fifty Feet BRITISH PLANES FLY LOW OVER ROOF-TOPS RAIDS BY DAY ON NORTHERN FRANCE AND AT NIGHT ON ESSEN LONDON, July 4. This morning a raid over Bremen was made by the R.A.F. only a few hours after the last bomber finished the night’s attack. The planes flew low over the roof tops and released their bombs from a height of 50 feet. Wreckage was thrown several hundred feet higher than the aircraft. One plane flew under high power lines and another brought back telegraph wires hanging from its fuselage. Railway yards,.a goods station and an aerodrome were also attacked. A German island was attacked and large buildings hit and smoke seen to roll over the target. Five British planes are missing. Sixteen enemy fighters were destroyed in a daylight sweep over Northern France this afternoon. In this second sweep of the day Blenheim bombers also took part and attacked a power station and chemical works. Three of our fighters and one bomber are missing. Essen and Bremerhaven were raided after dark last night. The raid on Essen, the centre of the great Krupp armament works, was especially heavy. The planes succeeded in piercing the barrage and flew in from all angles and many different, heights to drop tfyeir bombs. The crew of one plane alone reported six good fires in the target area. Seven British planes are missing. There are no reports of bombs having been dropped in any part of Britain today. This makes the'third raid free day.
