OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

BASKETBALL SCORING (To the Editor.) Sir,—ln reference to “Gallery’s" letter in your paper last evening I would like to say: “There is no bad sportsman as bad as a sportsman who cannot take a beating.” This seems the case of the person who showed his ignorance by writing such a ridiculous letter, for is it not right that the W.F.C.A. were quite willing to let the score stay at 11-9 in their favour as the unofficial blackboard had it? I would like the public and also those interested in this winter sport to know that the W.F.C.A. were quite willing to leave the score at 11-9 in their favour, as shown on the blackboard, but immediately the official score was announced, reversing the decision, they considered they had scored more points. I myself would like to congratulate the State team on their performance in this game. As far as I could see they Were the first to congratulate the W.F.C.A. on their win as the unofficial blackboard read, showing that they also misunderstood the result. Thanking you for the space provided in youi columns. —I am. ANOTHER OF THE GALLERY. Masterton, July 5. (To the Editor.) Sir,—l am rather astounded at the attack being made on our basketball officials . Do your correspondents not realise that these officials are just plain human beings, “perhaps a little more human than most,” who are endeavouring to foster good, healthy sport? I am sure some players appreciate what they are doing in the interests of this sport, and I am surprised so few in the gallery do likewise. By next season, one hopes, the game will have progressed sufficiently to warrant the formation of a properly constituted association. This will be an opportunity 7 for the several critics to come forward and give their assistance, Which I am sure will prove so valuable. —I am, etc., “GATE-CRASHER" Masterton, July 7 5.
