STATE THEATRE
“YOUNG PEOPLE.” With rollicking entertainment its keynote, “Young People” has been called Shirley Temple's most enjoyable picture. Jack Oakie and Charlotte Greenwood are co-starred with her in the 20th Century-Fox film which will be shown tonight at the State Theatre. Joyfully musical, the new film also boasts an unusual story. Charlotte Greenwood and Jack Oakie adopt Shirley Temple and though they achieve success with their vaudeville act, they decide to retire on a New England farm. Their life in the small town is depicted as the film moves swiftly to the stirring conclusion. Paced by five new and catchy tunes by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren, “Young People” has been labelled a show full of gay good time. Others featured in a fine supporting cast include Arleen Whelan, George Montgomery and Kathleen Howard. Included among the new songs, which seem destined for a long stay on the hit parade, are: “Fifth Avenue,” “I Wouldn't Take a Million,” “Tra-la-la-la,” “The Mason-Dixon Line,” “Young People.” The picture is applauded as Shirley Temple’s happiest hit. She sings five catchy songs. Jack Oakie is at his best in a particularly humorous role, and Charlotte Greenwood appears leaner, lankier, and funnier than ever.
