RENEWING PILLOWS
SIMPLIFYING A MESSY JOB. Wars or no wars, household necessities continue to wear out and to need replenishing from time to time, so the only thing to do nowadays is to set to work to repair the damage oneself in as economical a way as possible. Restoring bedding is perhaps one of the most troublesome of all jobs to tackle, but even feather pillows can be quite easily renewed when the ticking wears out —if you know the way. Make a new case of ticking and leave about a lOin. opening at one side. Make a corresponding opening in the old pillow and tack the openings of the old and new cases together along one side or all round, if you prefer. Then carefully shake the feathers from the old into the new case. Run a tacking thread along just below the new opening, unpick and remove the old cover and oversew the seam of the opening in the new cover. If the feathers need washing, the simplest way is to transfer them to a muslin bag, in the manner already described, then wash them in several soapy waters, rinse well, and hang the bag to dry in the open air. When they are dry and thoroughly aired, transfer them to the new ticking cover you have prepared. At the present time linen ticking is hard to get and very expensive, but unbleached calico is strong, durable and quite satisfactory if you wax it so that the feathers cannot come through.
