AERIAL SURVEY

MANY IMPORTANT USES. ROTARY CLUB ADDRESS. An interesting insight into the development and importance of aerial survey work was given by Mr Piet van Asch, of Hastings, at the weekly meeting of the Masterton Rotary Club today. The president, Mr P. F. Fagan, presided over a good attendance of members.

Mesdames P. van Asch and A. H. Daniell and Messrs J. F. Thompson (Greytown), H. Mackenzie Douglas and H. L. Cornish were present as guests of the club. Mr van Asch showed a - wide and interesting range of slides embracing the use and exploitation of aerial photography. He indicated that from the air important evidence of earlier types of civilisation had been discovered. From the air it was observed that corn, in a certain area of England, ripened at slightly different stages, which gave a perfect outline of a former Roman town, hitherto not suspected. The speaker showed how aerial survey work played an important part in irrigation, town planning, checking soil erosion and forestry surveying. In Persia geologists worked largely from aerial photographs. Mr van Asch also showed slides of surveys made in New Zealand and England. The views of the Esk Valley and London were particularly good.

On the motion of Mr T. A. Russell, the speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
