THE OFFER TO FRIENDLY SOCIETIES
NOT TO BE ACCEPTED IN AUCKLAND. UNTIL ARRANGEMENT IS MADE WITH DOCTORS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 2. The friendly societies in Auckland have decided not to accept the subsidy for medical benefits offered by the Government, because the immediate result would be the cancel'ation by the doctors of all their present contracts.
“The offer made by the Minister of Health, Mr Nordmeyer, was considered at a conference of the Auckland friendly societies and it was decided not to accept it,” said Mr John McLeod, the well-known authority on friendly society matters. The societies would have liked to accept it, he added, but they could not risk jeopardising the present arrangements the Government was endeavouring to make with the medical profession to come into the social security scheme, and till that was successful the friendly societies intended to continue as in the past. Members were still cheerfully paying medical dues and accepting the service provided under the medical contracts.
