MAGISTRATE’S COURT
SITTING IN MASTERTON SALES TAX RETURNS. MARTINBOROUGH DEFENDANT FINED £25. The fortnightly sitting of the Masterton Magistrate’s Court was held today. Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., was on the Bench. The Collector of Sales Tax proceeded against William Whitehorn for having failed, as a wholesaler, to furnish a sales tax return at Martinborough on October 28, 1940. Mr R. R. Burridge appeared for the Crown and Mr J. de V. W. Blathwayt for the defendant. Whitehorn was fined £25 and £2 12s costs.
On charges of having been drunk and disorderly and of causing mischief by- breaking a pane of glass valued at 15s, Joseph Cooper was fined £2 on each charge, with 10s costs.
John R. R. Ryder was fined 5s for having been drunk in Queen Street on July 2. James Henry Burling was fined £1 and £1 0s 6d costs on a charge of having kept two unregistered dogs over 6 months old. Jack A. Brooks was fined 10s and £1 0s 6d costs for having used hairdressing premises without a licence. Russell Hector Jorgensen was fined £1 for having been found drunk at the Langdale Hall on June 14. On charges of having driven vehicles without drivers’ licences, Alister John Collie, Thomas Dunn, James Hobson, Walter G. Howell, J. R. Williams, and C. J. H. Walker were each fined 10s with 10s costs. Fines of £1 with 10s costs were imposed on Norman R. Jones, Angus C. Keats, J. R. Williams and W. G. Smith for failing to carry warrants of fitness for their motor vehicles. On a similar charge A. R. P. Billings was fined 5s and 10s costs. Inspector J. McGregor prosecuted. Charged with having liquor in his possession at a dance at Langdale, V. Grey was fined £3 and £1 16‘s costs. Civil Claims. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following undefended civil claims:— Robert McKenzie and C. C. Marsack v. Kenneth H. Garside, claim £6 6s. costs £1 14s 6d; the Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-op. Association Ltd.- v. A. P. F. Seymour, claim £2lO Is 6d, costs £9 ss; Borough of Masterton v. Alice E. Woodmore, claim £8 Is 9d, costs £1 12s 6d; Borough of Masterton v. Alice E. Woodmore, claim £4l 6s 7d. costs £4 3s 6d; E. Major v. M. Dunn, claim £3 17s, costs £1 6s 6d.
