CARE OF THE HEDGE

GIVE TOPDRESSING OF MANURE.

Those who have planted coniferous hedges will find that the plants are much benefited by a topdressing of manure over the roots at this season of the year. If this is thought to be unsightly a scattering of soil over the top of the manure will put matters right. The winter rains will disintegrate the manure and by spring it can be mixed with the soil.

It is, of course, most necessary to keep an area on each side of the hedge free from grass and weeds. If grass is allowed to grow right up to the trees while young, progress will be slow. Similar treatment can be given to isolated specimen trees, the roots of many kinds being near the surface.
