PATRIOTIC FUNDS
PROVISION BY TAXATION NOT FAVOURED.
VIEWS OF RECENT CONFERENCE,
A Masterton suggestion that patriotic funds should be raised by taxation was not favoured by a recent conference of national and provincial patriotic committees, held in Wellington. A.dvice has been received by the Town Clerk, Mr G. T. O’Hara Smith, from Mr G. A. Hayden, officer in charge of the National Patriotic Fund, regarding the Masterton proposal, which emanated from the Masterton and District Patriotic Committee. This advice states that the conference decided to take no action regarding the suggestion. The conference took the view that the object of collectingpatriotic funds was to supplement official expenditure by voluntary effort and if the suggestion were adopted, the Government would of necessity take over control of the expenditure of the monies raised by taxation andthis would be contrary to the whole spirit of the patriotic organisation.
