WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATIONS ANNUAL REPORT
PAST SEASON’S ACTIVITIES REVIEWED.
INTER-CLUB AND OTHER EVENTS.
“Considering the many difficulties facing sport generally, and badminton in particular in present times, a successful season has been experienced, competitively, financially and socially,” states the annual report of the Wairarapa Badminton Association in which the activities during the 1939-40 season are briefly surveyed. The report, which is signed on behalf of the executive by the president, Mr E. K. Eastwood, and the secretary, Mr C. J. Carle, will be presented at the annual meeting which will be held at the “Times-Age” Office at 7.30 o’clock on Wednesday, July 9. The report states: — “Affiliations: The handicaps under which the association has been carried on are reflected in the serious decline in affiliations. The total membership of clubs affiliated to the association is 81, compared with 204 last year, 222 in 1938, and 307 in 1937. Four clubs are affiliated as against nine last year. The loss of drill balls has accentuated the position. “Inter-club competition: The interclub competition was conducted in one grade, namely B. All four clubs entered. St Matthew’s Club went through without a loss, and was awarded the association’s cup. Masterton was second and Red Star was third. Martinborough filled fourth position. Although the competition was' held in three rounds, it proved successful.
“Representative activities: Home and away representative fixtures were played with the Manawatu Association, and proved an enjoyable experience to those taking part. Wairarapa won both games. Many inter-club matches were played with the Pahiatua Club. The following gained representative honours during the year: Mrs P. Feltham, Misses B. Pay ton, N. Rishworth, N.' Richards, N. Yates, B. Boyd, V. Watson, U. Holtham; Messrs P. Hawksworth, J. J. Payton, P. Rishworth, C. J. Carle, B. M. Hurley, W. L. Harrington, G. B. Peterson and N. Faulkner.
“Tournament: Owing to general war conditions bringing about the loss of the drill hall, the annual championship and handicap meeting was not held. The New Zealand tournament was abandoned. General: To the many club members serving'in his Majesty’s armed forces, the association extends sincere wishes for a safe return. The sum of £5 was loaned to the Government as a free of interest war loan for the duration of the war. “In conclusion, we offer our thanks to the officials of the Manawatu Badminton Association, for their hospitality to our representatives; to our auditor, Mr N. H. James; to the Press, and to all others who have given assistance during the season.
