MADE BY ALLIES IN SYRIA TOWN EAST OF DAMASCUS OCCUPIED. PROGRESS IN THE COASTAL ZONE. LONDON, June 29. In Syria, Allied forces have occupied a town 60 miles south-west of Palmyra and 40 miles east of Damascus. In the coastal area, a further position has been captured. A R.A.F. Middle East communique reports that planes of the Royal Australian Air Force shot down six Vichy aircraft near Palmyra without loss.
VICHY FORCES MAY TRAVEL UNARMED ACROSS TURKEY. REPORTED PERMISSION. LONDON, June 28. 1 he Ankara correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain states that Turkey has given permission for the evacuation of Vichy troops from Syria across Turkey. Troops must travel as unarmed citizens. It is expected that only a fraction of the Vichy forces will bo able to leave Syria, because of lack of transport. AIR SUCCESSES SIX VICHY FIGHTERS SHOT DOWN. BENGHAZI AND TRIPOLI BOMBED. (British Official Wireless) (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) RUGBY. June 29. success was the shooting down of six Vichy Glenn-Martin fighters by the Royal Australian Air Force near Palmyra. A R.A.F. Middle East communique states: "R.A.F. bombers successfully attacked stores and dumps near Palmyra and the railway line and other military objectives at Rayak. The harbours of Benghazi and Tripoli were heavily bombed on the night of June 27. Many hits were made on moles at both places. None of our- aircraft are missing in these operations.
